UNDERSTANDING pH in SKINCARE - What you need to know

Our skin pH (the power of hydrogen)  is referenced by our 'Acid mantle',  a fine film consisting of sweat and sebum with a slightly acidic pH of around 5-6, on the surface of the skin that helps protect our skin and keep it healthy.  Damage to our acid mantle occurs when its normal balance is interrupted - ie. largely through the use of commercial skincare.  Other factors include environmental stresses like UV rays and pollution, changes in diet, hormones, illness, lack of sleep, water, and exercise, too much caffeine, alcohol intake or acidic food and of course, too much stress!

Typical signs of acid mantle damage (facial or body)  (ie. pH imbalance)  take the form of many skin afflictions such as inflamed conditions (dermatitis, eczema, rosacea), overly dry or overly oily skin, acne and wrinkles.

Understanding pH in your Face Care

Most commercial cleansers (even natural ones) cause an alkaline balance (ie. strip your skin of its natural oils), which can take at least 30 minutes to return to normal pH - or up to 8 hours for older skin types!  (The same can be said for commercial shampoos!)  Combined with water which is around 7pH, it makes your cleansing routine something to really think about!

Toners were then  formulated to correct pH after cleansing!  In theory, yes - but adjusting the pH on your skin from one extreme to another causes more damage to your acid mantle.

Commercial moisturisers often have a low pH, ie. acidic, the benefit in being that they can have an exfoliation effect - which can be a plus to maintain a youthful complexion...however a more neutral pH moisturiser is what your skin really needs for optimum skin health.

Chemical exfoliants generally have a very low acidic pH of 2-3, designed to dissolve dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal.  However this extreme will irritate and burn the skin, damaging the acid mantle.

So it's vitally important to choose your skincare and cosmetics that have a relatively balanced pH close to our own skin in order to maintain a healthy balance.

It's no surprise that so many people today have developed skin sensitivities and conditions from using everyday skincare products formulated with extreme pH levels.

With iSHiKi-SKiN products you can be confident that you are using everyday products with neutral, skin friendly pH levels!

Our natural cleansers use organic clay minerals to effectively dissolve dirt and cleanse the skin.  Completely soap & sulphate free. Avoid all harsh alkaline sulphate ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and all soaps (pH of 9-12).

Our toners are alcohol, soap & sulphate free, using botanical extracts to purify and balance the skin. Avoid harsh alkaline sulphate ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and alcohol.

Our face moisturisers are formulated to do just that!  Totally skin loving and gentle.

Our natural exfoliants are very effective, yet still extremely gentle without being too low in pH to disturb the acid mantle.
